Maneuvering College Life by Yourself
A Little Bit About Me…
Firstly, I would just like to thank anyone who took time out of their day to click on my blog. My name is Emily Schelstrate (she/her) and I am a freshman at Texas State University. I am majoring in Public Relations pursuing a concentration in Digital Media Studies and I am minoring in Business Administration. As I mentioned, I am a freshman in college. None of my high school friends attend Texas State with me, so my first semester I spent virtually every day alone and I had to learn how to be dependent on myself and enjoy my life without the convenience of friendship.
I tried several different ways to phrase that last sentence without it sounding so morose. I actually enjoy maneuvering college by myself because it has helped me discover traits and strengths I did not know I possessed previously. In high school, it is easy to try new things with a safety blanket of friends surrounding you. It is important to learn and grow individually in a new environment, which is what the posts of my blog will circulate around.
Hopefully through this blog my audience can catch onto my personality and relate to my experiences I write about. In constructing this blog, I aspire to help students or people like me who are in a new environment with no friends learn how to enjoy the bliss in independence.
I am from San Antonio, Texas which I love because of the diversity showcased-every corner, restaurant and shopping strip is unique. I like to think I am the same way. I don’t really know how to describe myself without sounding like every other person writing a blog introduction post, but I will try to separate myself by presenting the information in bullet form.
- My favorite songs are “Goats in Trees” by Foster the People, “LUST” by Kendrick Lamar and “OBLIVIUS” by The Strokes.
- My favorite food is broccoli-it is top tier.
- My favorite book is “Animal Farm” by George Orwell.
- My favorite movies are “La La Land” and “Life is Beautiful”.
- My favorite sport is running. I love watching and participating in Track & Field and Cross Country and I will never understand why people don’t enjoy running.
- I am definitely a cat person.
- My life motto is “Drip or Drown”.
Here are a couple of my favorite moments of my life…
I am choosing this topic because it is something I familiarized myself with the entire first semester of my college experience, and I think everyone can benefit emotionally and mentally from learning self sufficiency. I hope I can explore more ways to connect to myself and be content in my independence. This blog is not intentionally targeted towards a particular audience, but I think that my posts will resonate the most with college students like me or anyone else who likes spending time alone.
Some potential posts to expect could explore how to study alone, find your inner peace, deal with stress by yourself, succedd in your classes and enjoy time just by relying on yourself. I think I have the ability to write about and provide insight about these topics because I learned all of this my first semester here at Texas State.
I am new to blogging and WordPress. Sanguinely, I can learn to incorporate more editing tools with WordPress to present my content in a more visually pleasing way and I want to incorporate auxiliary links to apps like Instagram, Twitter and Spotify.
Every blog post will end with something I like or think is important and want to share with others. Right now, I am listening to the album “CASE STUDY 01” by Daniel Caesar in full at least two times a day. There is not one song I dislike. I highly recommend. https://open.spotify.com/album/4mvxoogQn8p84Wz17zTHnJ?si=SHINxzUsTZCI1sOlBm7Cdw
